Never drag your feet about finding an attorney if you need one, even if all you need is a general practice lawyer. In most cases, you'll want to be prepared as early as possible. On the other hand, you should take at least some time to investigate candidates to be sure they're suitable.
If you ever suspect you're dealing with an ambulance chaser rather than a good general practice lawyer, shake them off as quickly as possible. Too many lawyers grab any profitable case they can, and could care less whether they're actually working in your best interest.
